Tube Requirement

  • Lavender Top Tube (EDTA)
  • The lavender top tube is typically used for the collection of whole blood or plasma for hematological testing and immunohematological testing. The tube contains an anticoagulant called ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), which binds to calcium ions in the blood and prevents clotting. EDTA is a chelating agent that is commonly used in laboratory settings for anticoagulation purposes.

CBC Result Time

  • Approximately a few hours to one day.

CBC: Specific Instructions for Patients

  • Fasting is not required.
  • Inform your healthcare provider if on any medications, including antibiotics, blood thinners, etc.

CBC: Specific Instructions for Medical Personnel

  • Specimen Requirements:
    • Amount Needed: 3.0 ml.
    • Transport: Refrigerated only.
    • Unacceptable Conditions: Frozen specimens; Clotted or hemolyzed specimens.
    • Specimen Stability: Can last for 48 hours refrigerated. Testing cannot be added on after 48 hours.
